Our first performance was in February, 1967 at the Bedford Jaycees Battle of the Bands. We entered as a trio with John on guitar and vocals, Dave on drums and vocals, and me on organ, left-handed bass and vocals. We played two songs:
  • For What It's Worth - Buffalo Springfield
  • I Think We're Alone Now - Tommy James & the Shondells
Our chief competition for that Battle of the Bands (BoB), were two other Bedford bands, The Displaced and The Bitter Ends.

After all the bands played, the judges awarded first, second and third prizes. And the awards go to:
  1. The Bitter Ends
  2. The Music Bachs
  3. The Displaced

We thought we were the better band. Clearly, the judges did not.

The Bitter Ends had been the best show band. Dressed in tuxes, lead singer Donnie Chase danced as he sang and at one point, put the microphone cord around his neck and acted like he was hanging himself.

I liked the Displaced. They did Yardbirds and had an attitude. Their guitar player, Tommy Engel (a friend of mine through the years), was dressed in red patent leather Beatle boots, leather pants, and a polkadot shirt. He probably was too loud, but he had the guitar sound the rest of us liked.

Here's the Bedford Minuteman's account of the event:
