The Cameron Company

In the beginning...

I don't remember the way we met. In February of 1972, I was attending classes at Berklee again when Lane Cameron, another student, asked me if I wanted to join his band. I remember being excited about it, especially since I hadn't been in a working band since the Field of Zaad had broken up the previous May.

Lane had me come to his apartment to work a bunch of songs out before I would ever go to a rehearsal. I was introduced to his wife, Trina, who was played bass and sang in the band. Wow! She was the third girl I'd ever played with in a band - and all three were bass players.

Anyway, Lane had a bunch of material charted out. Very professional. And the material was cool stuff by Seals & Croft, Allman Brothers (Revival, Midnight Rider, In Memory of Elizabeth Reed). We wore some kind of shirt & pants outfits, which I didn't like - I'd never worn an outfit before - but they were tame compared to what I had to wear in other bands later on.

The band consisted of Lane (guitar/vocals), Trina (bass/vocals), Bob (drums), and me, Michael Workman (keyboards/vocals). We started in clubs in Revere, MA. We then hooked a gig in Rowley, MA at Eddie Johnston's (Boston Bruins goalie) night club for six weeks. Actually, they were there longer, but I didn't last. I don't know why, but I don't think Trina liked me. Lane was a business as usual kind of guy and his business was to keep the band happening. So he let me go.
